Position Description:

The Student Conduct Specialist V (Student Care and Conduct Coordinator) independently responds to students in distress and serves as a non-academic student conduct officer. Be able to effectively engage external stakeholders in understanding the University conduct processes and polices.  Proficient and effective utilization of Maxient Conduct Software to produce student conduct analytics to inform practice, and ability to accurately identify cases for review of federal and state law, to include, but not limited to the Clery Act. This position serves on the Student Affairs On-Call Crisis Team providing 24-7 responses. This position provides timely support to departments regarding behavioral concerns and distressed student situations. The position assists in the development of the Dean of Students policies, procedures, and publications including the Student Handbook. The role involves conducting benchmark studies to assess the current practices of peer institutions, recommend best practices, and generate comprehensive reports to outline these recommendations. Assist with other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Independently serve as a non-academic student conduct officer in the Dean of Students Office. Create, schedule, follow-up and document cases in the student conduct software database.  Update case files and track sanctions for completion and input University of Louisville Police Department reports as needed.

  • Perform student conduct analytics and assessments to assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of the student conduct program.

  • In administrative conduct meetings, meet with students who have allegedly violated the Code of Student Conduct.  Carry out administrative conduct meetings, to resolve cases, and assign sanctions as appropriate based on assessment of information provided.   

  • Serve as a facilitator for student conduct hearings.  Following guidelines directed by the Kentucky Campus Due Process Protection Act, manage assigned cases, ensuring their effective administration by preparing all notifications and documentation; scheduling conduct meetings and hearings; notifying all participants; and review all physical and/or documentary information submitted to the hearing boards.

  • Assist with students in distress and provide care and support as needed.  Responding with emotional awareness to reports, provide 1 on 1 meetings, campus and community resources to help students resolve immediate difficulties and concerns with mental health, medical, and financial issues.

  • Serve as a 24-7 crisis responder on the Student Affairs On-Call Team by providing support and resources to students involved in an accident, an incident of physical or mental harm, or who are transported to the hospital. Understand when On-Call responders need to coordinate an appropriate response with other university officials and family members.  Offer student support such as absence notifications, commitment to care, and other administrative processes and follow up actions that are needed to assist the student in returning to the University.

  • Advise faculty and departments on behavioral concerns and distressed student situations.  Evaluate conduct behaviors by University students that have been determined to be alarming, disruptive, or threatening to the student or others. Discuss and develop interventions for crisis, and care concerns that arise in the residence hall and/or concerns presented from other campus partners and individuals including faculty, staff, students, visitors, and family members of students.

  • Ability to work with external stakeholders, often under adverse conditions, to explain, discuss, and interpret policies and procedures. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the application of policies and procedures to specific circumstances.

  • Assist with presentations for faculty, staff, and students regarding crisis, conduct, and care. Establish a strong working relationship with University Police, Campus Housing, PEACC, Counseling Center, etc.

  • Assist in the development of Dean of Students policies, procedures, and publications including the Student Handbook. Conduct benchmarking studies to determine current practices of peer institutions, recommend best practices, and create reports to outline best practices.

  • Supervise the Hearing Council, which is composed of faculty, staff, and students. Maintain updated spreadsheet of hearing council members. Provide training and update materials as needed.

  • Establish and maintain a relationship with Student Involvement to educate and update recognized student organization on conduct, rights and responsibilities, and community relations. 

  • Serve as a liaison between the Dean of Students Office and the SGA Judicial Board by assisting with complex conduct issues and, clarifying procedures and options available to respond to issues between student organizations, branches of SGA and election disputes. 

  • Coordinate programs, events, and activities for the Dean of Students Office, such as the Annual Student Awards program and unit-wide collaborative programs.  Participate in programs and activities as a representative of the Dean of Students Office to include but not limited to Welcome Week activities and University and Divisional Committees (i.e. Meal Plan Waiver Committee).

  • Manage the application process of the student emergency fund.  Review emergency fund applications, determine award, and coordinate the distribution of the award.

  • Work with outside vendors to provide or create programs that support the basic needs of students seeking resources.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Kentucky Campus Due Process Act and government regulations that pertain to students including FERPA, HIPPA, Section 504, and Americans with Disability Act.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the concerns and needs of a diverse student population.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
