Job Description

Summary

Dr. Yingbin Fu's laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is seeking a talented research technician. The Fu lab is interested in using the visual system to study biological mechanisms underlying various types of neurodegeneration, and to develop innovative treatment strategies. The Fu lab has made significant progress toward the understanding of two blinding diseases that includes that Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), the most severe retinal dystrophy in early childhood, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the elderly. The PI has won the National Institute of Health/National Eye Institute Audacious Goals Challenge Awards twice (https://rebrand.ly/nih-award1; https://rebrand.ly/nei-award1). The lab places emphasis in "Translational Research": discovering mechanisms → developing innovative treatment strategies → moving into clinical trials by working with both academic and industry collaborators. The technician is expected to participate in a research team in developing highly innovative and effective treatment for AMD by targeting its multiple underlying causes.

Job Duties

  • Maintains mouse lines.
  • Performs advanced in vivo imaging including fundus photography, fluorescent angiography, indocyanine green angiography, optical coherent tomography in animal models
  • Performs laser surgery, gene therapy and drug delivery in animal models.
  • Performs experiments using molecular biology technologies.
  • Participates in lab meetings and reads applicable literature.
  • Prepares figures and assists in writing related to experiments performed.
  • Maintains lab supplies and inventory (ordering, stocking, preparing solutions/media).
  • Maintains general lab environment that includes equipment maintenance, and repairs, organization, and cleanliness of the lab.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Two years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.
  • Has coursework in biology and experience conducting basic science with rodent model systems.
