Assistant/Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology

The Department of Counseling & Human Development invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Counseling Psychology, at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor. Research interests are open but should clearly demonstrate a program of inquiry within the broadly defined areas of social justice, health equity, behavioral health, and/or working with marginalized and minoritized communities. Other areas applicable to counseling psychology that may complement existing faculty research interests are also welcomed.

We seek a scholar who will conduct research, advise and supervise students in the Counseling Psychology master’s and doctoral programs, and teach courses within the department, beginning August 1, 2025. There are also opportunities to teach at the undergraduate level. We welcome applicants with a wide array of counseling experiences who can effectively supervise students that offer services to diverse client populations. The faculty work closely with students and each other and the program atmosphere is positive.

Our department is committed to preparing practitioners and scholars who work with diverse populations to address equity and opportunity gaps (e.g., access to culturally responsive community-based mental health services) and build a socially just and democratic society. That commitment is reflected in the relationships this department has established with mental health agencies, community organizations, the local school district, and behavioral health-related entities across the city.  For instance, our strong commitment to social justice is evidenced in our ongoing community service partnerships (e.g., Youth Detention Services [YDS]; Jefferson County Public School System [JCPS]) associated with the department clinic, called the Cardinal Success Program. The Cardinal Success Program is an interdisciplinary, community-based clinic embedded in a historically oppressed community in Louisville, KY.  The Cardinal Success Program @ Nia is a community mental health clinic that provides services for clients across the lifespan, while the Cardinal Success Program @ Shawnee is housed in an historically under-resourced high school.  Therefore, the successful candidate must demonstrate how they can assist students in developing their cultural humility and clinical skills in the context of intentionally coordinated clinical placements within a diverse metropolitan area.

Minimum Qualifications

• An earned doctorate in Counseling Psychology by August 2025.

• Demonstrated experience working with marginalized and minoritized communities and detailed evidence of a commitment to social justice and equity frameworks.

• Demonstrated record of research productivity and teaching commensurate with rank and experience.

• Evidence of external funding or potential for funding, commensurate with rank and experience.

• Licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in teaching at the university level and evidenced ability to teach courses consistent with the mission and vision of the Counseling Psychology Program. Teaching interests are open, though interest in some of the following courses would be helpful: diagnosis, career counseling, practicum, assessment, theories of counseling, and child and adolescent therapy. There are opportunities to develop advanced courses based on the applicant's interests, as well as elective courses.

• Active membership and engagement with professional organizations (e.g., American Psychological Association, Kentucky Psychological Association) within the field.

• The ability to effectively advise and supervise master’s and doctoral students.

The Department of Counseling and Human Development includes doctoral programs in College Student Personnel, Counselor Education and Supervision, Counseling Psychology, and Educational Psychology, Measurement and Evaluation. Additionally, there are master’s programs in Art Therapy, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, College Student Personnel, and Counseling Psychology. There are multiple opportunities to work across disciplines within the college and across campus.

Salary: Competitive, based upon qualifications and experience

Appointment: 10-month with possibility of summer teaching
