The University of Louisville's Budget and Finance Department is seeking a Director Financial Management. The Director of Financial Management will manage an office that provides strategic financial management to designated administrative units. This position will also oversee capital management activities within the university The Director will effectively lead staff whose responsibilities include providing financial management services, budgetary monitoring, strategic fiscal guidance and overall financial management of their assigned areas.
This position reports to the Vice President for Budget and Finance and is responsible for implementing sound financial practices, ensuring compliance with university policies and regulatory requirements, as well as providing strategic financial leadership that supports the university's mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management and Strategy: Oversee the development and implementation of efficient and clearly defined fiscal management practices, including monthly reporting, that are in alignment with the university's goals and objectives.
Budget Management: Lead, for assigned units, the annual operating and capital budgeting process, collaborating with key department and unit personnel to craft and then maintain structurally balanced budgets that ensure financial resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.
Financial Reporting: Guide the preparation and dissemination of accurate and timely financial reports, including income statements and budget-to-actual reports that facilitate data-driven decision-making. Provide strategic input, including timely financial updates, to stakeholders of the office and the Vice President for Budget and Finance.
Capital Management: Manages, monitors and reports on short- & long-term capital debt service budgets, including the collaboration with the Budget Office, Controller’s office and University Planning to ensure budget to actuals are aligned and structurally balanced.
Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analyses to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, and then provide recommendations for improvement to office stakeholders as well as the Vice President for Budget and Finance.
Staff Management: Supervise and mentor a team of financial staff, providing leadership, professional development mentoring, and guidance.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in public administration, economics, finance or related field plus six years of relevant experience.
Sophisticated verbal and written communication skills that include the ability to clearly and concisely convey complex information to broad audiences.
Demonstrated ability to implement and coordinate complex strategic budget initiatives
Highly proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
High-level knowledge of budgeting, finance, and accounting principles.
Highly developed analytical skills that include the ability to manipulate data, identify data patterns and trends, and effectively communicate the associated stories.
Ability to balance disparate opinions and perspectives and find solutions in a positive, consensus-building manner.
Demonstrated experience in senior financial leadership roles, preferably in complex organizations. Leadership experience in a university or college setting is particularly desirable.
Prior experience within higher education that includes an understanding of the unique financial challenges, compliance requirements, and funding sources in academia.
