What You Will Achieve
The Discovery Quantitative Analytical team at our Groton campus leverages state-of-the-art technologies, automation and novel methods for high-throughput characterization of lead chemical matter. We work in partnership with various disciplines to accelerate project progression and support the Pfizer portfolio as a whole.
How You Will Achieve It
This position provides financial management, analytical and operational support within Vaccine Research & Development (VR&D). Specific responsibilities include:
Liaising with program teams to maintain plans of forecasted and ongoing portfolio funded VRD activities Generating and updating estimates of internal and external resources required to execute VRD activities Developing materials required to support funding requests for VRD activities at governance meetings Compiling reports summarizing resource demands, potential risks and opportunities that may impact resource demand Resolving funding or payment issues that jeopardize VRD deliverables Generating and managing VRD operating budgets to agreed targets Performing ad hoc analyses to support business decisions
This position will be responsible for the following:
Portfolio Budgeting: Work with Chief Scientific Officers (CSOs), VRD program teams and partner lines to compile details of planned and ongoing portfolio activities (toxicology, Clinical Trial Material (CTM), serology & clinical trial conduct). Using these plans derive candidate and study level cost forecasts using cost models and historical spending information. Participate in the creation and improvement of cost models. Use experience to review data for sensibility. Resolve issues with management and adjust figures as appropriate. Analyze and run scenario planning on study designs to assist program teams in designing studies efficiently.
Portfolio Forecasting: Work with study team members, partner lines and R&D Finance to track activity progress and create/update monthly forecasts accordingly. Support the populatulation of R&D Finance forecasting tools (including RAPID and Cognos Activity Based model). Troubleshoot issues and address questions as they arise (inc. tool improvements). Review variances between budget and forecast and generate explanations. Generate reports to convey trends and issues identified by forecasting process.
Serology Forecasting: Ensure that latest clinical plans are consistent with those maintained in Athena and resolve issues identified. Support the forecasting of portfolio funded serology costs including external assay conduct, contractor and fixed term employee demand and laboratory reagents and supplies.
Governance and Strategic Documents: Collaborate with management and development directors to identify governace required to make portfolio investments and generate the documents required to support them. Assess requests for incremental budget requests and develop strategies to avoid them if feasible.
Operating Expense Forecasting and Reporting: Generate and calendarize estimates of operating budget requirement for VRD departments. Track department headcount and activity to generate ongoing forecasts and work with department heads and management to identify strategies to meet budget targets. Analyze and run scenario planning on budget information as required. Collect accrual information and address ad hoc questions on accrued amounts for operating and grant expense on an as needed basis. Review data for sensibility and adherence to policies.
Issue Troubleshooting / Ad Hoc Reporting: Troubleshoot financial issues affecting VRD and associated partner lines. Assist teams in the understanding of types of expenses (OPEX vs. Portfolio vs Capital). Provide ad hoc reports on expenses and commitments as requested by management. Resolve issues with management based on experience and take initiative to update policies, reporting or training materials for use with VRD teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must-Have
BS or equivalent preferably in the science or finance areas with 8-10 years of experience in drug or biological development in the pharmaceutical business.
Understanding of clinical trials, and associated budgets.
Excellent organizational and communication skills required.
Sound understanding of vaccine development principles essential.
Strong oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, coordination ability, cost management skills, and innovative and problem-solving skills
Nice-To-Have
MBA with 6+ years of experience or PhD or equivalent with +2 years of experience preferred.
