Dean of Student Success
Job Description
The Dean of Student Success is the chief officer of services to support student learning and well-being on a campus, other campus locations, or virtual links assigned to that campus. The Dean leads and manages a comprehensive program of services that promote engagement and success for a diverse student population in a safe environment. The scope of the Dean’s role includes strategic leadership for fidelity of implementation of student success and equity initiatives; academic support and enrichment for which involvement of faculty is a critical element; creation of community for students; collaboration for services meeting student economic and social needs; and the fostering of a culture of care on the campus. The Dean reports directly to the campus Provost and is a member of the campus Provost’s leadership team.
Duties and Tasks:
Academic and non-academic support services include the following:
- Tutoring services, including embedded tutoring and academic coaching.
- Required testing services (on campus and virtual).
- Student Life programs and services.
- Campus information desk.
- Support to the faculty and others in managing students with non-academic issues that may negatively impact student performance and success.
- Division Dean for campus Student Development courses. Assists Associate Dean with student development curriculum, course delivery, assessment, instructor hiring, scheduling and training, and reporting.
- Counseling, including behavioral intervention, transfer, and academic success.
- Academic overload and return from academic suspension requests.
- Campus liaison for Enrollment Management and Student Success departments with Service-Level Agreements to the campus which may include Financial Aid, Registrar, Veterans and Military Services, Advising, Accommodations, Financial Stability and Advocacy Center, ADVANCE coaches, College Steps, university representatives, and International Student Services.
- Serves on the Provost’s leadership team and collaborates with academic divisions on student success initiatives (including those established collegewide).
- Coordination of development and submission of assessment reports for units reporting to the Provost.
- Professional development liaison for Student Success faculty and staff.
- Supervises assigned employees.
- Manages budgets of all assigned units.
- Oversees or performs the functions for provision of academic and non-academic support services.
- Coordinates or collaborates with others on student success initiatives, annual performance evaluation reports, data analysis and disseminations, agreements for student services, and implementing or supporting professional development for employees.
- Participates in a professional manner in required meetings, committees and projects.
- Represents the college and campus professionally at external activities, whether assigned or voluntary.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- A range of computer user skills such as use of MS Office or similar products, email tools, basic spreadsheets use and development, web-based research tools, understanding of social media use in higher education.
- Knowledge of current principles and processes for providing services to internal and external customers.
- Understanding of current practices in student tutoring, mental health support and advising
- Awareness of laws, regulations, restrictions and requirements related to Student and Academic Services, and solid knowledge of those regulations directly related to assigned responsibilities, such as, but not limited to Student Codes of Conduct, and policies on use of technology for college purposes.
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
- Ability to do and act on cost/benefit analysis in collaboration with the Provost.
- Knowledge of Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Copyright laws relative to higher education use of materials, and basic employee rights under the law.
- Master’s degree awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
- Experience in higher education.
- Experience in supervisory roles with responsibility for both personnel and budgets.
- Good office computer skills.
