What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Senior Occupational Health Physician to work as a key member of the Employee Health & Well-Being team at Sandia National Laboratory.

The Occupational Physician will be expected to provide exceptional service at the worker, organizational and institutional level. You will have opportunities to learn and practice medicine in exciting fields such as: radiation emergency medicine; chemical, biological and physical hazard exposure; ergonomics; substance abuse testing; travel health; reproductive health; population health and others.

The Senior Occupational Health Physician serves as:

Consultant and subject matter expert for complicated workers compensation cases.

Subject matter expert during exposure events and provides toxicological advice and guidance.

Occupational medicine subject matter expert for field health and safety stakeholders.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Provide treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses
  • Medical surveillance and certification examinations
  • Fitness for duty evaluations including coordinating assessments with onsite EAP
  • Urgent care for non-occupational health issues
  • Medication support where appropriate for early management of chronic conditions including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and mental health
  • Supervision of co-situated Advanced Practice Clinicians
  • Support of emergency response efforts
  • Provision of subject matter expertise for various medical surveillance and certification programs
  • Consultative input on institutional projects or policy development as they relate to worker health
  • Membership in the institutional biosafety committee

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$257,700 - $438,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) in Occupational and Environmental Medicine
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in occupational medicine with 10 or more years of recent clinical experience
  • Ability to obtain a license to practice medicine from the California Board of Medical Examiners and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
  • Experience with occupational health-related federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Ability to obtain a license to practice medicine from the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
  • Ability to obtain a license to practice medicine from the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
  • Demonstrated leadership experience collaborating, managing, and working effectively with personnel at all levels, including Advanced Practice Clinicians, Registered Nurses and Medical Assistants
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and improvement, team building, managing resources, prioritizing work activities, and meeting organizational objectives and deadlines
  • Recent clinical experience in providing direct patient care including the treatment of minor injuries including closure of simple wounds and treating minor burns and eye injuries
  • Experienced at performing health surveillance and certification examinations
  • Demonstrated experience in the review, analysis and interpretation of diagnostic testing including, but not limited to laboratory work, electrocardiogram, pulmonary function testing, audiometry, vision testing, and fitness assessments
  • Demonstrated passion for worker well-being and population health management
  • Competency in using an electronic medical record
  • Outstanding communication with patients, leadership and coworkers
  • Demonstrated leadership in promoting a culture of psychological safety and organizational learning
  • Experience with issues, complications, and treatments relating to radiological, chemical, and biological hazards and diseases
  • Demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting occupational medicine
  • Skills in the preparation and presentation of occupational medicine technical and non-technical presentations or reports
  • Current certification for National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners through FMCSA for performing medical examinations for commercial drivers
  • Current certification as Medical Review Officer for reviewing drug testing results
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health regulations and standards including OSHA standards
  • Working knowledge of Workers Compensation regulations and workplace implementation
  • Demonstrated experience with emergency preparedness support
  • Working knowledge of hazards related to biologic, chemical, physical and radiologic hazards
  • Understanding of office and non-office ergonomic science
  • Prepared to work with other organizations within Sandia including Employee Safety and Health on optimizing worker safety and meeting OSHA and DOE reporting and regulatory safety standards
  • Familiarity with DOE health and safety standards
  • Working knowledge of worker fitness for duty and workability
  • Experience with performance improvement projects
  • Experience creating and updating medically relevant policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with lifestyle medicine including exercise, nutrition, sleep, and other preventive health strategies
  • Demonstrated contributions to the development of health and wellness programs
  • Commitment to growth as a health team player

About Our Team:

The Benefits and Health Services Department teams with our corporate counterparts to develop, implement, administer, monitor, and oversee a full suite of benefit programs, including medical/dental/vision coverage, disability, group life insurance, sickness absence, qualified and non-qualified pension and savings plans, ancillary benefits, and others. The goal of the health services clinic is to help provide a healthful place to work through occupational health care, surveillance programs, immediate/urgent care, consultation and advise on personal health concerns; health promotion programs, employee assistance counseling, physical therapy, and related services.
