Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is a Department of Energy national laboratory with over 1,500 scientists and engineers performing world-class research aimed at solving the nation's energy, environmental and security challenges. Argonne is located 25 miles southwest of Chicago on a beautiful 1,500-acre campus.

The Decision and Infrastructure Sciences (DIS) division researches, designs, and delivers scientific tools and methodologies to inform decision-making regarding the most challenging security, risk, and resilience problems. As a multidisciplinary national laboratory, Argonne offers an exciting atmosphere in which to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that focus on complex technical problems and integrated application of natural, social, and computer science practices.

To assist our research mission, DIS is seeking a Climate Data and Resilience Analyst to support our growing climate decision science and resilience analyses missions in collaboration with DOE program offices, state/local/tribal/territory (SLTT) governments, and industry partners.

In this position, you will:

  • Develop methodologies and processes to compile and analyze relevant weather, climate, and climate model datasets to support decision applications at local, state, national and global scales.

  • Leverage advanced computing resources to scale analytical methodologies to national or global scales.

  • Contribute to the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML)-based weather and climate models; numerical weather prediction; and big data processing and analysis.

  • Visualize analytical products using geospatial analysis.

  • Perform statistical and visual data analysis of climate and weather datasets, including implementing, for example, event identification/detection methodologies.

  • Engage with DOE, SLTT government, and industry sponsors to support data development, resilience planning, and decision-analysis applications.

  • Interface with subject matter experts in key fields from across Argonne to produce decision-relevant climate and weather datasets, and support their implementation in infrastructure modeling/analysis, or similar applications.

  • Work with DIS and other Argonne subject matter experts to support government sponsors interested in a wide range of both domestic and international climate decision-support.

Position Requirements

Candidates with experience working in one of the technical areas described will also be considered.

  • Experience working with DOE program offices, infrastructure owners/operators, and/or state and local governments on climate resilience topics is preferred, but not essential.

  • Experience working with gridded and array-based datasets (e.g., netCDF, GRIB/GRIB2)

  • Proficiency in Python, R, Julia, or similar programming languages

  • Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, and/or PostGIS geospatial software systems

  • Ability to use independent judgment and abstract from specific problems to general solutions/findings.

  • Strong oral and written communications skills, including the ability to translate technical information into plain language, and strong ability to work effectively in a team-based project environment.

  • Skill and experience working on multiple projects simultaneously, including demonstrated project management practices and the ability to manage deadlines and resources.

  • Skill and experience collaborating with team members and leading independent analysis in support of projects.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

  • Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment where all can thrive.

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:
