College/Department Information
The Office of Legal Affairs is Augusta University's in-house legal counsel. Attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs provide legal advice and counseling to the University through its administrators, faculty, and staff in the course of their duties on behalf of the University.
The Augusta University Legal Affairs Office provides advice on a variety of topics including contracts, employment and discretionary issues, inventions, copyrights and other intellectual property, and risk management. In addition to providing legal counseling to the University, other areas of responsibility for the Office of Legal Affairs include policy interpretation and advice, administration of the University's grievance and dispute resolution procedures, contract review, and - in conjunction with the Attorney General - management of actual or threatened litigation in which the University is involved. The Office of Legal Affairs is also available to provide training and informative programs on legal issues applicable to units of the University.
Job Summary
Exciting opportunity to join the Office of Legal Affairs at the State of Georgia's premier health sciences research university and public Academic Medical Center! Reporting to the General Counsel, this position will handle a variety of legal matters for the university and offers an excellent career path for those interested in growing and advancing in higher ed law and in-house counsel careers. The position will strongly focus on legal advice and legal tasks related to litigation, contracts, employment, and university policies. The right candidate will have excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, solid judgment, strong initiative, eagerness to learn and grow, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a good work ethic, work well in a team environment, patience but also drive to get things done, and a sense of humor.
The Office of Legal Affairs is Augusta University's in-house legal resource and advises the President, the Provost, all Deans, the President's Cabinet, world-renowned researchers and faculty, and administrators and staff on all matters affecting the university. Attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs are highly regarded and provide advice on a variety of topics including contracts, employment, faculty and student issues, litigation, freedom of expression, federal and state regulations, inventions, copyrights and other intellectual property, and risk management. In addition to providing legal counseling to the University, other areas of responsibility for the Office of Legal Affairs include policy interpretation and advice, administration of the University's grievance and dispute resolution procedures, and - in conjunction with the Attorney General - management of actual or threatened litigation in which the University is involved. The Office of Legal Affairs also provides training and informative programs on legal issues applicable to all units of the University.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:

LEGAL CONSULTATION AND ADVICE: Legal consultation and advice with deans, chairs and other senior leaders in the University colleges and schools on employment matters and state and federal regulatory obligations.
CONTRACTS: Legal review and advice on University contracts for medical and academic affiliation agreements, inter-agency services and support agreements, leases and real property transactions, employment agreements, service contracts with third parties, and licensing agreements.
POLICIES: Legal advice and legal work on University policies, including legal review on all draft policies and policy revisions, being a lead attorney for University Policy initiatives and regulatory requirements, and proposing new policies to conform to "best practices" and legal obligations.
OPEN RECORD REQUESTS: Providing legal advice, legal review, and approval of University responses to Open Record Act (ORA) requests, including reviewing ORA requests for legal validity or relevance, leading the effort to gather responsive documents and redacting confidential and privileged information.
LITIGATION MATTERS: Providing support and legal advice on defense of litigation matters, to include working with the Attorney General's Office on ongoing litigation matters, preparing and advising University employees on deposition and witness testimony, gathering and reviewing responsive documents for subpoenas, reviewing and advising on motion papers, participating and advising on mediations and settlement negotiations.
LEGAL REPRESENTATION: Providing legal representation to key University committees, working groups, task forces and strategic projects, to include Study Abroad Committee, CARE Committee, COi Committee, Minors on Campus Committee, Privacy Committee and similar University committees.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
J.D. (Juris Doctorate) law degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 2 (two) years' experience. Must be admitted to the State Bar of Georgia within twelve months of being hired.
Preferred Qualifications
Relevant experience in higher education, contracts, litigation and/or employment will be strongly preferred. Experience working in both legal and nonlegal teams, advising business units or organizations on workplace issues, communicating complex issues and ideas to nonlegal audiences, and using judgment and leadership in crisis or urgent situations is appreciated and valued.

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills
ABILITIES
Ability to provide legal advice to non-lawyers and business clients on wide ranging issues
Ability to provide legal work on a variety of contracts, agreements, licenses, and policies
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday-Friday (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
