Job Description

We are actively seeking a skilled and experienced Facilities Interior Design Specialist to join the Project Management Organization (PMO) within Argonne’s Infrastructure (IS) Services Directorate. In this vital role, you will act as Argonne’s interior design subject matter expert (SME) and owner representative. Join us to make a lasting impact on Argonne's facilities through transformative projects, including space modernization, renovations, and new facility construction.

Responsibilities

Provide support to PMO’s Infrastructure Program Manager in the effective planning and execution of a wide range of projects that require knowledge and expertise in the professional discipline of interior design. Responsible for creating functional and aesthetically pleasing interior spaces by collaborating with customers to understand their needs, develop design concepts, select materials and furnishings, and oversee the implementation of those designs, ensuring projects are completed within budget and timeframe, while staying updated on industry trends and design techniques. Additional responsibilities:

  • Lead Customer Communication: Meet with customers to discuss their project goals, desired style, space usage, and budget limitations.
  • Provide conceptual space planning by analyzing room layouts, create conceptual floor plans, and determine furniture placement to optimize functionality.
  • Lead Design Development: Generate design concepts through sketches, 2D and 3D renderings, mood/concept boards, material samples, and color palettes.
  • Source material selection and specify finishes like flooring, wall coverings, lighting, furniture, and décor items that align with the design vision.
  • Lead Customer Presentations: Present design proposals to customers, address feedback, and finalize design decisions.
  • Support Project Execution: Provide support to a Project Manager during the execution phase (procurement, submittal review/approval, construction, close-out) by acting as Argonne’s interior design SME, owner representative, and liaison to the Customer to ensure design quality.
  • Develop Audio Visual (AV) integration by collaborating with internal AV technical resources to translate customer goals and requirements into executable design packages.
  • Credential Maintenance: Keep abreast of current design trends, building codes, and new materials available in the market through continuing education and credential maintenance.

Position Requirements

  • Strong creative vision, aesthetic sense and ability to translate customer needs into visually appealing designs.
  • Technical proficiency and expertise in graphics and design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and 3D visualization programs.
  • Technical proficiency in standard office productivity software such word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, and presentation programs.
  • Effective communication skills including verbal and written communication with customers, managers, and vendors to ensure project clarity.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation and ability to communicate with others with tact and diplomacy at all levels of the organization.
  • Comprehensive problem-solving skills including the ability to identify and resolve design challenges within project constraints.
  • Strong organizational skills to meet deadlines and budget requirements.
  • Working knowledge of office and laboratory space design standards, building codes, regulatory compliance, fire codes, sustainability, and accessibility (ADA and ABA) to ensure safety principles are appropriately incorporated into designs.
  • Comprehensive: Working knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC).
  • Experience in interior space renovation projects and furniture installations.
  • Current National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification is required.
  • Design portfolio of built work is required.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of Argonne policies and procedures.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to develop productive relationships with Argonne customers, management, project teams, and collaborators.
  • Knowledge and experience in color, lighting, finishes, and materials selections, including furniture and all installations in a commercial environment.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in large scale move planning and management.
  • LEED AP Interior Design + Construction USGBC credential desirable.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in interior design, interior architecture, or architecture and 6+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Master’s degree in interior design, interior architecture, or architecture and 4+ years of relevant experience.
