Job Description

The Assistant Director for JD Advising at Harvard Law School’s Office of Career Services (OCS) plays a pivotal role in supporting a talented and diverse student body as they explore and pursue their career aspirations. As part of a dynamic and collaborative team, the Assistant Director provides individualized guidance, resources, and programming related to private sector opportunities, while collaborating with partner offices such as the Office of Public Interest Advising (OPIA). This position requires extensive interaction with students, participation in the design and implementation of career development initiatives, and active engagement in the day-to-day operations of a fast-paced and innovative student services office.Â

As Assistant Director for JD Advising, you will:Â

  • Provide comprehensive career counseling to JD students across their 3-year HLS experienceÂ
  • Develop and present live and recorded programming to large and small groups of students on a range of career-related topicsÂ
  • Moderate career panelsÂ
  • Serve as a liaison to and collaborate with various student groups on career-related projectsÂ
  • Write career-related materials including sections of the OCS website and our weekly emails to studentsÂ
  • Collect and analyze data to track student progress through the recruiting processÂ

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

J.D. with 3 or more years of relevant professional work experience requiredÂ

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have:Â

  • Experience in a law school career services office or in a law firm with exposure to recruiting and working with new lawyersÂ
  • Experience working as a BigLaw attorneyÂ
  • Experience and enthusiasm for working one-on-one with a diverse group of studentsÂ
  • An understanding of the BigLaw recruiting landscape across multiple marketsÂ
  • Comfort level with large data sets and familiarity with excel formulas is a plus.Â
  • An interest in helping students look beyond the BigLaw landscape as they think about long-term and short-term goals, including moving in-house or into the public sectorÂ
  • Exceptional organizational, project management, interpersonal, presentation, and writing skillsÂ
  • An ability to plan and meet deadlines, work independently and effectively as part of a team, have a strong work ethic, superb judgment, and an enthusiastic approach to workÂ

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.Â
