What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced COMSEC Lead Technologist to oversee and enhance our LAN/WAN infrastructure and communications security measures. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for providing leadership to a team of COMSEC personnel to ensure the integrity and security of sensitive information across our network systems. Additionally, you will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Department of Energy/Intelligence (DOE/IN) and Other Government Agency (OGA) sponsors, addressing their networking and COMSEC needs. You will also be the lead technologist for the Community of Practice initiative for COMSEC, focusing on all Upper-Level LAN connections across three Sandia locations: New Mexico, Minnesota, and California.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the installation, configuration, and maintenance of LAN/WAN infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure optimal functionality and security.
  • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive COMSEC policies to safeguard sensitive information.
  • Oversee the management and maintenance of COMSEC material in both physical and electronic formats, including keying responsibilities.
  • Manage communications security accounts and create and maintain databases to ensure compliance with established procedures and instructions.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to enforce robust network security measures.
  • Serve as the SME for DOE/IN and OGA sponsors, providing expert guidance and support for their networking and COMSEC requirements.
  • Lead the Community of Practice initiative for COMSEC, coordinating efforts for all Upper-Level LAN connections across Sandia locations in New Mexico, Minnesota, and California.
  • Respond to security incidents, conduct investigations, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of network configurations, security measures, and compliance protocols.
  • Provide technical support to end-users and conduct training sessions on network security best practices.
  • Analyze, interpret, and implement communications and technical policies, procedures, and directives from the National Security Agency, U.S. Department of Energy, and Other Government Agencies (OGA).
  • Author and maintain comprehensive documentation, including forms, policies, and procedures, ensuring adherence to program, corporate, and federal guidelines.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$74,700 - $144,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Requires high school diploma plus three or more years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience in communications security, with a strong focus on the implementation and management of COMSEC measures.
  • Experience implementing new connections, including the setup of cryptography equipment, switch configurations, and endpoint connections
  • In-depth knowledge of cryptographic protocols and secure communication technologies
  • Active DOE Q-level (or DOD equivalent) security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Extensive experience with software upgrades and the development of security tools from source code.
  • Proficient in performing hardware additions, changes, and upgrades related to secure communications.
  • Previous experience working with OGA to develop new solutions and establish new connections.
  • Strong understanding of secure hardware components and their configurations.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, etc.) are highly desirable.
  • Strong skills in software development related to networking and system utilities.
  • Familiarity with emerging security measures, including encryption technology and secure network configurations.
  • Ability to monitor secure communications and respond effectively to security breaches or abnormal behavior.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
