Job Description

Summary

The integration of a Genetic Counselor (GC) within the Immunology, Allergy, and Retrovirology (IAR) division will enhance patient care, streamline genetic testing workflows, and support research and quality improvement initiatives. GC support in specialty clinics, inpatient care, and independent counseling sessions ensure timely genetic evaluation, result disclosure, and patient education. The addition of a GC conducting independent counseling will also allow the faculty physicians to see more routine patients.

This position is located at Texas Children's Feigin Center in the Texas Medical Center.

Job Duties

  • Counsels patients with indications of genetic risks in pregnancy.
  • Conducts preliminary research such as; family and patient medical histories, coordination of genetic testing, and review of patient referrals.
  • Drafts and sends letter to patients summarizing the genetic counseling session. Letters are sent to the patient and referring physician.
  • Answers patient calls and assesses need for services.
  • In some cases, refers clients to appropriate agencies and physicians.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • EducationRequired: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.
  • Experience Required: None required.
  • Certification/Licenses/RegistrationRequired: Board-eligible or Board Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
