Description:

Performs high complexity tissue grossing in the surgical pathology area and assists with autopsies.

• Under the direction of a pathologist or pathologist’s assistant, performs gross description and specimen dissection of simple surgical specimens and prepares/fixes semi-complex surgical specimens.

• Processes cytology specimens under supervision of cytotechnologists.

• Performs instrument maintenance according to established protocols.

• Assists pathologist and pathologist’s assistants in performance of autopsies, and frozen sections.

• Responsible for the maintenance and functionality of the morgue.

• Registers patients in Atlas system and accessions cases in Cerner.

• Identifies and logs specimens with incorrect, discrepant, or missing information, and resolves in partnership with the resolution department.

• Monitor pending logs and resolve outstanding orders in a timely manner.

• Discards surgical tissue according to policy.

• Files slides and blocks.

• Assists with training new employees.

• Maintains supply inventories.

• Supports and utilizes LEAN principles and standard work.

Schedule: Evening shift 12:30pm - 9:00pm; no weekends or holidays

General Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree in a science-related field OR education equivalent that includes the following:

  • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR

  • 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

• Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word/Excel.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills required.

• Good hand-eye coordination.

• Working knowledge of basic medical terminology.
