Job Objective:

Responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering sterile processing education, orientation and competency programs while leading departmental quality monitoring, compliance auditing, and performance improvement initiatives. Ensures staff competency and adherence to applicable standards and regulations (e.g., AAMI, AORN, ANSI, CDC, and accrediting bodies), supports survey readiness, and partners with leaders to improve outcomes such as quality defects, instrument readiness, documentation accuracy, and workflow reliability.

Job Description:

Education:
Required: High school diploma, GED or higher level degree
Preferred: Associate’s degree in related field (education, healthcare, business, science)

Licensure/Certification:
Required: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) and Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER); Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) within one (1) year of hire

Experience:
Required: Three (3) years of experience in Sterile Processing

Ability to collect data, trend results and drive improvement, Ability to interpret manufacturer IFUs and translate into workable standard practice, Ability to prioritize fluctuating workload and times to meet position demands, Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines, Ability to speak in front of groups with confidence and clarity, Ability to teach, coach, and validate competencies effectively, Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and other relevant software applications, Knowledge across core sterile processing areas (Decontamination, Assembly, Sterilization, and High Level Disinfection (HLD), Knowledge of AAMI standards and best practices for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, packaging, and storage, Skilled in auditing, data collection, and presenting findings in a clear, actionable way, Strong interpersonal skills, Written and verbal communication skills

Essential Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and reports suspected violations.
2. Develops and maintains sterile processing education program for onboarding, annual competencies, and role-based training (Decontamination, Assembly, Sterilization, Case Cart, HLD as applicable).
3. Designs and delivers instruction using multiple formats (hands-on training, classroom, huddles, content, skills checklists).
4. Conducts competency validation and documentation.
5. Maintains education materials including standard work, quick-reference guides, visual aids.
6. Coordinates preceptor program, including selection, training, and coaching of preceptors.
7. Provides targeted retraining and remediation based on quality findings, errors/defects, near misses, and process drift.
8. Supports new product/equipment implementation with in-services, super-user development, and go-live rounding.
9. Builds and maintains the department’s quality program, including routine audits, tracking tools, and reporting cadence.
10. Performs quality, compliance and competency audits throughout all sterile processing sites.
11. Tracks quality metrics and trends (e.g., defects reaching OR, wet loads, missing instruments, peel pack errors, documentation misses).
12. Leads or supports corrective action plans and process improvements; verifies sustained improvement through follow-up audits.
13. Maintains readiness for surveys and inspections; supports standards implementation and documentation control.
14. Collaborates with Infection Prevention, OR leadership, Quality, and Risk as needed on reprocessing concerns.
15. Assists with developing and updating standard work to align with standards and manufacturer IFUs.
16. Facilitates staff engagement around quality: huddles, feedback loops, and improvement ideas.
17. Ensures training and competency documentation is complete and audit ready.
18. Supports instrument tracking system accuracy (e.g., tray records, revisions, count sheets, location builds, staff compliance).
19. Maintains controlled education documents and revision history.
20. Partners with leadership to address performance gaps through coaching plans and competency-based remediation.
21. Provides routine reporting to department leadership (dashboards, scorecards, audit results, training completion).
22. Serves as a resource/SME for sterile processing, other organizational-wide departments processing instruments/equipment/scopes and AAMI/TJC/CMS compliance and interpretation.

23. Participates in committees (e.g., Infection Prevention, OR/Perioperative Quality, HLD, Safety) as requested.
24. Performs other duties as assigned.
