Job Description
This position is responsible for: Assessing, performing, and evaluating all therapeutic, diagnostic, and monitoring services in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. In accordance with a physician's order, the pulmonary technologist performs procedures with a degree of independent clinical judgment under the general supervision of the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory and Manager of Respiratory Care. The pulmonary function technologist is knowledgeable in the safe operation, calibration, maintenance, and quality control of the equipment used in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory.
Position Responsibilities:
Complete all duties in accordance with a written or verbal medical order and the established guidelines, policies and procedures. Schedule studies to accommodate patients based upon scheduled studies, availability of equipment and staff.
Perform the following diagnostic and therapeutic procedures:
- Pulmonary function testing (pediatrics, adolescents, and adults) to include, but not limited to:
- tidal volume, spirometry, lung subdivisions, functional residual capacity, and diffusion studies.
- post-bronchodilator
- cardiopulmonary exercise testing
- body plethysmography
- pulmonary metabolic testing
- prevocational pulmonary studies
- arterial blood gas sampling
- non-invasive monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry, capnography, transcutaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide
- medical gas and aerosol therapy
- chest physiotherapy
- airway management
- emergency respiratory care
- electrocardiograms
- Evaluate the reliability and reproducibility of test results, patient performance, and clinical implications.
- Perform and document the scheduled quality control procedures as related to the proper calibration of equipment, reference controls, problem identification, corrective action, and follow up of all equipment in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, including the first response cart.
- Perform metabolic and exercise studies
- Participate in the evaluation of pulmonary function equipment, supplies, and procedures.
- Document results of studies and therapy in the medical record.
- Participate in parent, family, and patient education.
- Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement; working with departments/services to improve the care provided.
- Provide age- and developmental-appropriate care to infants, children, adolescents, and adults.
Education:
- Graduate of an Approved Respiratory Therapy Program with a Diploma or AAS Degree
- Registered Respiratory Therapist
- Certified or registry-eligible pulmonary function technologist with a minimum of one (1) year training and experience in cardiopulmonary laboratory is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year experience is preferred New grads welcome!
Licenses/Certificates:
- Licensed by the Board of Medicine to practice in the state of South Carolina
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certification required.
